Help I've fallen and I can't get my fan clutch loose!
OK. I have a 97 rover se 4.0. For my life, I cannot get the fan clutch loose from the water pump shaft, I even bought (after much hesitation) a fan clutch wrench kit. I would assume if the water pump turns counter clockwise that I would loosen the fan clutch by turning it clockwise...RIGHT???...Meaning left hand threads??? Meaning righty loosey??? All I want to do is replace the front crankshaft seal...A 1 hour job...Right??? 4 days and a combined 8 hours later. Any ideas?
Put wrench on the big nut.
Stand in front of the truck with a hammer.
Hit the wrench toward the left sharply, pretend it is the parts goof that sold you the wrench. Not a love pat.
You may have to use a wrench to pull on tensioner pulley and increase tension, or stuff rags in there. You could be one of those linemen on the football team and it is not going to come loose with slow and steady pressure.
When you get to the crankshaft pulley (harmonic balancer) nut; breaker bar, wedge against floor, bump starter. I have heard tell from some that the front seal can be pulled out with a couple of wood screws, so I'm not 100% sure you would need to take the front cover off. Of course the front cover "kit" is like $114 and includes new oil pump, crank seal, WP gasket, cover gasket. And you can eval the timing chain while in there.
Some do a temporary seal on the front crank seal - clean it off, apply RTV, let it cure a day, crank. It splits in a hairline, and holds down oil leak until you can get at it.

Been there hit that. I used a 2X4 to pry against tensioner while my daughter used a wood splitting maul against the wrench. No success She hit it hard a bunch of times. I also used a visegrip against the water pump pulley to kinda lock it from turning. Your picture shows the hammer toward the driver's side of the wrench as to hit it to the right (passenger side) as in lefty loosey. Please tell me your picture is wrong?

No - picture is correct, hit wrench to make it move toward left. - when you are facing the radiator. So that would be toward the passenger side of the truck in North America. I have had mine off my 97 so many times I just use a pair of channel locks and something to slap them sharply with.
If you have removed serpantine belt it is harder to do.
