Default Help with sunroof leaking from where drain tubes connect

I have a 2000 Disco II I had a water leak and removed the headliner. The front sunroof drain tube where it connects to a black plastic box on the underside of the sunroof was broke off and a repaired it and is no longer leaking. but now i see the two small black plastic box shaped thing where the drain tubes connect to the under side of the sunroof our leaking where they silicone them in. there are two drain tubes on each sunroof each drain tube connects to the black box shaped things with black silicone around each one. what is the name of the box shaped thing where the drain tubes connect ??? they are leaking where the factory silicone around them. I'm trying to figure out if I can remove them and re-silicone them? our what I should do to stop them from leaking.

Hi

Unfortunately it is a well known and recognised fault on the D2 and LR are aware of the issues as they publish a 'fix' as an addendum to their RAVE manual. The plastic boxes or mini sumps do become detached and the small pipes are prone to breaking off. You will need to remove them and clean up the sunroof frame and boxes and Araldite them into position using a compatible Araldite product (be careful some Araldite isn't compatible with certain plastics). There is another source of leakage from the mastic around the plastic frame and sunroof trim on the D2 roof. The only permanent way to deal with this is to remove the sunroof completely and clean up all the mating faces and reset it back into new flexible high temperature mastic suitable for boat or car caulking use which can be purchased from boat chandlers or car body specialist suppliers. It will pay do do this whilst you have gone to all the trouble of removing the headliner. If you have experienced leaks above the headliner you will inevitably suffer problems with the headliner material detaching and sagging from the foam backing at some stage. This is also caused by high temperatures and ageing. If you Google the problems there is plenty on the internet on these problems and possible remedies.

thanks for the help i'm going to look through the rave manual again. i'm going to take off the silicone I put around the black boxes and remove them and do it the right way. I'm also going to remove the sunroofs and reseal them with 3M 4000 adhesive sealant is that's the kind of stuff your talking about when you say mastic?

Hi

That looks good for the job and will seal the sunroof the the plastic seal and sunroof frame. Be sure to clean up the mating surfaces well before you seal them to get maximum adhesion - preparation is 90% of the job.

On-line Product Catalog: 3M

Bon courage
