Before pinning the sleeves, which i will have to find a day or two from being a dad taxi after work, i was thinking about trying the plugging of the bypass hose first to cool it down a bit. I recently changed my thermostat to the 180 degree one. Im in florida and only saw a few degree drop. Without hollowing out the innards of the thermostat, cant I install the bung in the bypass hose to force all the coolant through the radiator. It will still fully open at 180 so start up will get to operating temps quicker, but fully open through the radiator only at 180. Thoughts?
My 03 Disco 2 was clacking so bad it was embarrassing to drive it. I took my motor out and disassembled it for sending off for new topped sleeves. Reading this changed my mind completely. I have the bare block on an engine stand in my garage now and will drill and pin this weekend, saving me thousands.
Thanks to everyone involved.
I will report the success.
Well, it worked, sort of, the clicking or clacking did stop completely. The engine is as quiet as a mouse now but I still have a pressure leak in the coolant system. I was forced to remove the motor and disassemble it completely so the crack in the block at cyl #6 can be fixed, which I suppose will entail having it re sleeved completely.
Never the less, the pining of the sleeves was simple and did completely solve the noise.
Hilarious and very thoughtful. I have an 03 that I have a love hate relationship with. Haven't had that problem yet but I'm aware of the shortcomings of the Bosch 4.6. Thanks
I'm surprised that you only heated it to 220 degrees to pull the liners. That is well within the range of the operating temperature of the engine with the stock thermostat.
And consider that the oil temps are much higher. I have a temp gauge at the sandwich plate and see up to 240F at hwy driving when it's hot outside. Despite a 180 thermostat. Saving the oil cooler in 03/04 D2 seems to contribute to the problem.
Great effort and hard work! I am wondering how long this lasted. My 2004 slows ticking under load and sometimes seems quiet. I am curious as to weather or not one can just live with it and the engine goes on it’s regular lifespan. I have about 112 thousand miles.
I pinned two of the cylinders today. Have videos and pictures and will do a before and after. Cylinder wall of completed threading Installed with threaded stud in
