Default LT 230 Transfer case rebuilt

I am in the long overdue prossess to rebuild my "OLD'' LT 230 transfer case.
Found the bearings to be fairly worn but everyting else in good shape.
The Main gear carrier shaft seems dodgy:
I am able to move the bearings by hand in fact it is such a loose fit that when held vertical the bearings slides down the shaft.
Serial no: 43 D1 202656
Is this normal or do I need to fit a new shaft?
Any recommendation will be appreciated.
