I'd suggest doing the same for the coil. Remove it, clean it up with Windex, dry it, reinstall.

i bought a new one, picking it up at 4. will clean the cap as instructed. the cap is pretty new and doesnt show signs wear.

Rotor and cap. Not concerned about wear, concerned about carbon tracking.

.....and ROTOR. Your spark was being grounded by the ROTOR so don't overlook it please.

Scouts..I'm installing a new rotor. Picking it up this afternoon. Cleaned cap with Windex and installing new rotor....good yes?

Should I clean anything inside the distributor area..?

If your getting a new rotor make sure it's a Lucas. Aftermarket caps and rotors don't work well. If it's not just clean the crap outta the rotor you have and it'll be fine if there's nothing physically wrong with it. Try the test again with the cleaned rotor to see if it arcs, bet it doesn't.

No, no need to. Your only concern is carbon tracks not a spotless dizzy interior.
