Default Serious steering play

I just purchased a 1988 Range Rover Classic. Silly me, purchased the truck sight, unseen. I just drove it for the first time today and noticed that there is a good amount of play in the steering and it "drifts". Any idea's. I owed a 93 LWB but never had this issue with my truck. Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks!
Kath

Dude -- check the tightness of the big bolt under the steering box. it's a 1-5/16" nut and you might need a 3/4" drive or 3/4-1/2 adapter. You will need to BEND the washer flat, tighten, and re-bend it. check manual for torque setting.

This is a dangerous problem that could result in loss of steering if it loosens and falls off !!! Don't get pulled over for DUI checks because of dangerous wandering !!!!

not only that be very carefull of the "magic" spot, if you over torque it to get a really nice feel you will wear out your worm gear in no time flat then you will have to replace your box all together, if that isnt the case already

I would insect the front end for any loose parts, tie rod ends, swivel bearings, trailing arm bushings, etc. If all is ok, you can adjust some of the play out of the steering gearbox.

Start with the swivel joints and cover everything steering and or bushing related, no telling what you find.
