Question Slight cooling water loss on a D2 TD5

Hi guys

I have recently completed a round trip of circa 2000 miles mostly on motorways and noticed a cooling water loss of between half to one pint. Should such a loss be of any concern? I have checked the oil filler cap and cooling water reservoir and there are no signs of the classic white scum or traces of water in the oil or oil in the water and no visible leakages around the head gasket of any type. I would welcome others opinions and diagnosis.

Regards OffroadFrance

If coolant pressure cap is wimpy, it can vent while you are driving. A paper towel zip tied on the vent line can confirm this is happening. If can't see a leak, a pressure tester can be used to pump system up to 15 PSI and wait about 30 minutes for it to appear. But at the age of the truck, this rate of coolant loss could be lots of little things. Perhaps just top up and continue to monitor.

Hi Savannah Buzz,

Many thanks for your advice. Reassuring and will continue to monitor and check out the water reservoir pressure cap for seepage. The problem is the truck is 10+ years old with 120K miles now and all original with only very few issues to date - fingers crossed.

I would go a step further and do a coolant pressure test ASAP so you can correct that leak. Any coolant leak on a Rover needs immediate attention or risk loosing your engine to a major over heat.

For reasons unknown to me, both my d2 s like to push coolant out of the overflow, on the expansion tank, until it is about 1" below fill level line, then stops.

My issues appear to be the same as Dusty1, the water/coolant level drops to half to one inch below the maximum level line and remains there with no overheating. The fluid is perfectly clear apart from the coolant colour and no other discoloration to give any clues. I will carry out a pressure test on the cooling system to 1-1.5 bar over 30 minutes to ensure no invisible leaks. I will also check out the potential pressurisation of the system by head cracks or gasket leaks but at present nothing appears to be apparent. Landrovers - huh!

Well you put a lot more thought in it, than I. I used a marker and put a new fill level line. a little ghetto, but it keeps me from worrying about it.
