Hi everyone, Im new, so spare me the flaming and just help if you would be so kind.

Anyway, I have a automatic 97 land rover discovery with 140k miles. The problem is a clunking noise that I have just started to notice. The clunk comes when I go heavy on the throttle, it down shifts for power, then when I let off the gas abruptly it shifts up and it clunks. I dont know if thats exactly what the shifting does in a auto since I am use to manuals.

So my question would be is that the "torque converter" (what one of my friends said)? Or is it something else? More importantly what can i do to fix it. Im fairly mechanically inclined but it is a european car so Im hesitant.

P.S. If I ease the throttle out slowly it does not make the clunking noise.

 

Have you checked your fluid levels, when was the tranny last serviced, have you inspected and lubed your u-joints, have you checked your motor mounts for cracks?

still need to check on my service records, purchased the rover used
The sound doesnt come from one side or the other and i can feel it in the throttle so i dont think its the U joints.
I will check the motor mounts tomorrow when the suns out.

At 147k there's a good chance that suspension bushings are worn, which will cause clunks. The rear axle A-Arm ball joint also causes clunks when it's really worn.
