Does is idle fine, and does the engine rev smoothly while in park? If so my first guess is VSS.... but that is just a guess.

whats got me beat also is why the reverse has zero problem with choking where as the forward auto gears are having a real hard time sputtering and choking and almost become undrivable -??

VSS = Vehicle Speed Sensor. Which would make sense with the difference between forward and backwards movement.

what are the faults that happen when this sensor decides to spit the dummy ?and good observation if it reacts differently to reverse and forward ..any other possibilities ?

someone has also suggested the injector pump when under load which would explain the reversing situation being ok given there is less load in reverse or a vacuum problem

Truth be told there is not a ton of diesel expertise (that I have seen) around here. Your question might draw better responses over at defendersource.
