Default What is the best way to manually turn over a 4.4 Liter motor in 2005 Range Rover HSE

I believe my 2005 Range Rover had hydraulic lock, and that the engine is toast, but before I decide that thought I would make sure something else didn't go wrong. I was putting out a tremendous amount of blue smoke out of the exhaust and so I pulled over. It was idling, and I heard a pop sound and it stopped immediately. I suspected oil in the cylinders and took the plugs out of each cylinder. It won't turn over even though the starter appears to be engaging. I want to manually turn it over. What is the best way to do that. A ratchet on the bolt of the crankshaft?

How about a Fan Clutch wrench. You can rent them at any auto parts store

I tried that, but the pulley just slipped on the belt.
