You have 100,000 miles on the ecoboost, 4 cylinder turbo engine. It is a direct injection engine and prone to gunking up.
As Fly2b suggests. Change ALL fluids. Not just the oil.
And have the state of the valves checked. You may need a flush prior to the oil change.
That is
Power steering
Coolant
Power Transfer Unit
Front differential
Rear differential
Rear 4 wheel drive clutch (Haldex unit)
Brake fluid
And all filters.
That particular engine and platform calls for synthetic fluids. (I know, I have one)
Are the brakes done? Alignment done? Canada is a big place, where exactly are you? The reason I ask is I wonder if the 4 wheel drive system has been extensively used.
If it gets cold in your neck of the woods, an inline heater is golden. (used to be called a block heater but now they install on the coolant line as opposed to heating up the oil)
There are many precise electric components in this vehicle. If the battery is not 100%, change it. It should register 12.8 volts after sitting over night.
Preventative maintenance will take you a long way. If you let things go, it gets very expensive, very quickly.
I use all terrain, all seasons in the summer. Only winter tires in the winter. The winter tires are on smaller rims.
I do agree with your daughter (and my daughter) that the driving position, manueverability and road handling are excellent for an suv platform.
