Default Coolant cap separated, blocks expansion tank

I had an instrument panel warning that my coolant fluid level is low. I removed the expansion tank cap but it seems to have separated and the pressure relief valve, the bottom half of the cap, is stuck. The opening is blocked so I can’t add coolant. Can I use force to remove it? It seems to be in tight.

I would NOT try to pry it out but try to twist it out counterclockwise maybe with a set(2) of tapered pliers that fit? Also wait until it is totally cooled down and at the coolest time of day.

If you get it out, you can buy a new cap.

If you can't get it out, just replace the coolant tank, it's easy to do.

If you buy the tank online, look at the pics and make sure the hose ports point in the right directions... there's a nearly identical tank for another LR model (evoque IIRC) which has one of the ports pointed in the wrong direction but third party vendors seem to mix them up. It won't fit the LR2.

Also is your coolant actually low, or are you just getting the warning?

If the coolant level is good but you're getting a warning you need to replace the tank anyway. The part of the sensor that's in the tank fails over time and won't float. It's built into the tank and cannot be replaced, just need a new tank.

I tried this and it worked. Bought a new cap at the Land Rover dealer and it’s all good now. Thanks a million.
