Default LR2 Navi details

Does anyone here have technical knowledge of how the Navi system on the LR2 works? I know there's a DVD drive, and a NavTeq Navstreets DVD that provides the data, but does the DVD unit play any role in navigation other than just providing a way to read the DVD? Is all the navi logic contained inside the head unit? If so, shouldn't it be possible to flash new firmware into the head unit to be able to read other navi dvd formats?

I found a few pages on the Navi system in the LR2 Technical Training Manual. I scanned them to a PDF (attached). Not a lot of details.

This is actually really good info, because it tells me that if I am going to reverse engineer anything, I only have to focus on the DVD module that does all the navigation logic as well as the navigation screen video. Cool. Thanks.

Seems like an a lot of effort to update an outdated system. Why not just replace the display with a CarPlay compatible unit?
