My wife & I recently purchased a 2013 LR2. I was told we get the first service free, but could not schedule it until the vehicle had 10K miles. I plan on discussing this "customer friendly" policy with the dealership, but that is another topic. When asked, I was quoted $79 to get the oil changed. How difficult is the oil change? Does it require the removal of the "undercarriage plate?" Are there any "major" access issues? Thanks, in advance! Dave.

 

Yes undercarriage plate needs to be removed to get to the drain plug, but you can siphon the old oil out through the oil filler and replace the filter, which is done through the engine compartment. I found it on another Forum, but not sure what to get to siphon the oil out. My LR2 has only 200 miles on it, so I'm sure they'll be more on doing your own oil changes by the time I'll need to start paying for them.

 

Note - oil and other fluid change intervals in current vehicles are designed for the leased versions, where cost of ownership is pushed to the next owner. 10K is the service interval, but vehicle will last longer if you use a more arduous schedule.

So by Rover, on the 2013 LR2, 10,000 miles or once a year on oil change.

For the LR3, 7500 miles or twice a year, arduous is 3750 miles or four times a year

For a Discovery 2, 7500 or twice a year, more frequent if arduous use

My point is that Rover has stretched the intervals out and out again, not based on advances in metalurgy or petroleum engineering; but on the wagging of tongues by the sales department. 5000 mile oil drain interval is more realistic. Driving around a crowded city in 90+ temp at slow speed (taxi cab service) is tough on any vehicle.

Oil vac pumps have been around, you can go manual, or air operated (shop air) or electric pump.

 

Thanks for the info. I'm new to Land Rover and haven't done much mechanical work on cars since the 60s or 70s when engines hand about 10 major replaceable parts without all this computer crap. I obviously have a lot of new things to learn. Have found much good info here.
