Default Parking brake seized

The parking brake handle on my 2008 LR2 is stuck in the down (released brakes) position. Has anyone had that problem? And what is the fix? I'm afraid to use too much force to pull the handle upwards because I might break something. I'm thinking the linkage is rusted stiff. Thanks.

Did it get stuck suddenly? If so maybe something got jammed in the mechanism under the handle? If the rubber liner is missing from that recess at the rear of the console objects like coins, etc can fall into the mechanism.

If it was simply not used for a long time, yeah that might be rust in the cable or mechanism. Maybe you can spray some penetrating oil into the cable runs at the rear of the car? Don't get any into the mechanism obviously.

Might have to take the mechanism apart, clean and lube it. With luck you won't need to replace any parts, just wire brush the rust off.

Access to the cables is in the rear center console. You remove the small access panel and the mechanisms and cables for the parking brake are there, and that is where they are adjusted. It is not uncommon for the cable(s) to seize due to rust. Replacement is not a ton of work but you have to lift the vehicle and remove the rear wheels and brake drums, as the parking brake pads are inside the drums. Starting at page 450 of the service manual you will see the diagrams and instructions for the parking brake. The cables themselves are easy to find on eBay. And pump some lithium grease in the channels if you are replacing the cables.

Ok, thanks everyone for the info. I'll check it out when the week-long rain and hail stops.
