Default Tell me what I need to know about an LR2 please

Im looking at getting a 2008 LR2 (Freelander 2). A 2008 only because 2009's don't seem to exist. I had a Discovery I and loved off roading. Nothing serious just some trails in local national forest. I have a SAAB 900se now. I like the idea of a LR2 (Freelander 2) over the LR3 (Discovery 3) because I can get 23mpg. I Drive about 65 mph and get 25-30mpg on the SAAB. I know Ill be dropping that mpgs with a Land Rover but I am too much of an outdoor guy to have a car. I need something that can do the trails to the camping spots.
I'm not looking to rock craw or cross any serious water. Just trails and small rocks. A big concern for me, coming from the SAAB, is the alternator placement. SAAB/GM/Opel decided to put it at the bottom of the engine, SO when ever I hit large standing water it shorts itself out, I'm on my 4th alternator, yes I learned my lesson the first time, but you can't always see the water.
SO LONG STORY SHORT: What do I need to know when looking for a LR2. Or honestly should I look into a LR3. I know they are infinity better off road than the LR2 but the gas mileage scares me. I got about $12-13k to spend and and go a little higher if I need to. Live in Charlotte,NC.
Quick MPG Calculations with ≈10,000 miles a year of driving: SAAB: 24mpg ≈ $1,249 LR2: 20mpg ≈ $1500 LR3: 16mpg ≈ $1875

When I think about the things you want on an off-road vehicle, like a low-range transfer case, rugged skidplates, high road clearance, and easy/cheap to find parts and make repairs, the LR2 is not near the top of the list.
