Transmission Issues
Hey all,
I have a 2008 LandRover LR2 with 180k miles on it. It has been pretty reliable since I purchased it with 140k miles. Recently I've noticed that after driving it for a little while (20 mins or so) whenever I shift to Reverse, I hear a loud clunk. I've also noticed some slight slippage (only a few times) that when moving on Drive. I know that the ATF in the tranny is supposed to be for life but I went ahead and changed the fluid anyway. I took it to a shop because I just couldnt get to the transmission refill bolt (it is under the airbox but behind an engine support). The shop drained it and added "4 quarts of ATF" according to the receipt.
I picked it up and tested it and I still notice the slippage and the clunk when I puit it on reverse (Again, only after 20 mins of use). Any idea what else I can check? I thought I Read somewhere that there are some electronics related to the transmission (maybe a relay or something?) Really dont want to replace the tranny if there is an easier fix.
Thank you!

The fluid really needs to be changed about every 40K miles IMO.
You need to do multiple drain and fills, not just one. I just did this, and used 18 qts. of Aisin fluid (OEM for this tranny). I'd recommend 22 qts (maybe more in your case, this was my second fluid change).
You can also disconnect the hoses from the ATF cooler and just let the tranny pump out the old and suck in the new. Need to keep the new fluid from getting contaminated, which is why I just did the drain and fill.
You can easily remove the airbox, just take off the top and the filter, then it pulls straight up. It's a bit of a tight angle to the fill plug but the torx bit has a little slop on angle. Or you can use a swivel adapter. I definitely needed a breaker bar, the fill plug is tight.
At your mileage, you need to flush out more of the old fluid, that one flush was not enough. More flushes may or may not solve your problem but probably worth a shot. I did my first flush at 110K, that improved shifting noticeably.
Also make sure your motor mounts are good... look at the upper torque mount on the pax side (by the coolant res)... if the rubber is cracked, then you need new mounts. Flushing the ATF and replacing motor mounts restored my tranny to smooth shifting. YYMV.
