Default '06 V6 Purchase Q's

I am going to look at a one owner, dealer maintained truck tomorrow. The vehicle seems to be very clean with the exception of the dash.

I have read that cracking is common in high humidity states and wanted to see what others think on this matter.

The truck has 82k and they are asking 12,900 for the truck.

Cheer,

Matt

I'd be more worried about the V6 than the dash. Are you sure you want a V6? Fuel economy really isn't supposed to be any different (maybe 1 mpg or so) than the V8, but it supposedly feels quite sluggish. The LR3 is a heavy beast...

The dash is purely cosmetic though, so it's up to you as to how much it bothers you. Replacement is $2000 or so (about $1000 for parts and $1000 for labor) and involvement a new VIN plate, so it usually takes a long time to order and receive parts. Could use that as a bargaining chip if you're really interested. Talk them down to "split the cost of replacing the dash" with you.

Yes I am sure on the v6. I have driven both models, and prefer the v6 from the stand point of being a global Ford motor and being able to use regular fuel.

I am coming from a Disco II so there is not much in this world that feels more sluggish then that.

In chatting with my dealer tech he was telling me he likes the v6 models because they were usually the stripped down ones with less to go wrong (IE no sunroof, less frills). Says never sees them come in for service, they just seem to keep going.

Apparently they run real well, despite being underpowered for the weight, and have very few problems with maintenance. I myself wouldn't mind driving one.

More power to ya. Should last you a while, if you can find the parts for whatever you might need down the road. What trim package does this V6 have?

Well I ended up purchasing the truck. It was exceptionally clean and for 11.5k I felt a pretty good deal.

The truck is SE7 trim w/ rear air and sunroof.

I have an 06 V6 and everything I've heard is that the V6 is more solid of an engine, not entirely sure why. I got lucky and caught a previous owner who did a trim and interior upgrade.

The only issues I have had are brake pads, wheel hub assembly and now Air Suspension complications that are currently being resolved.

For any power related issues, the sport setting is perfect for the extra boosts you need for passing or entering the freeway.

I will say that the cruise control on the V6 can be a bit annoying if you live in an area with varying elevations- that's about my only complaint between the v6 and v8

have fun

I love my v6. Not sure why some people avoid them. I have a basic se with the only problem was the remote. Ordered a new case and battery. Problem solved. As for sluggish yeah it is but a lot faster than my old disco and p38. Paid $11k with 74k on the clock for a 06 a year ago. I'm content

Not sure why the V6 would be a more reliable engine... the V8 is supposed to be pretty bulletproof (knock on wood). As far as the cruise control, even the V8 lacks power to keep a constant speed on the hilly freeways. Makes me a little more patient with other drivers though. I always used to bitch about why people on the freeway can't maintain a constant speed... always speeding up when I pull out to pass and slowing down when I get behind them. Guess it may be more the car than the driver in some circumstances.

I don't really have any clue as to what the power feels like in the V6 having never driven one myself, so if you like it and are happy with it, then congrats! And bentonrover, that's a fantastic price for the mileage and you got a lot for your money!

Default stick to the smaller tires

Hey there mwelton,

I have an 07 (manufactured Dec of 06). It is the V6 model, SE. I have quite a few of the options, but nowhere near all of them. I installed the Johnson Rod lift kit and 33s, and I run the middle grade of fuel so my cost per KM/mile is pretty high.

My advice is to stick with the smaller tires, as the power to gear ratio is just not happy with the 33s.

My nice options include:
Heated windshield and mirrors, Heated seats front and rear, 7 seats (3rd row), 3rd row (rear A/C), and the nice rims that are apparently very hard to come by (only used on 06 and $900+ each).

Added features:
30 inch LED light bar, custom home made roof rack, trailer brake controller, K&N air filter, Optima yellow top battery, Painted brake calipers, Johnson Rods, Trail Grappler 33" tires.

First pic is the day of purchase. Second pic is having a bit of fun with a buddy's old car, the rear wheel is off the ground enough to stuff a coffee cup under the rubber.
