Default 2005 LR3 Check Engine Light + Misfires

I have a 2005 LR3 HSE.

The check engine light came on a few weeks ago following a delayed start (extended crank). The vehicle turned over as usual but took longer than usual to start.

Immediately following this the check engine light came on.

Vehicle drove the same.

Took vehicle to LR Dealer. They checked codes and said that it indicates misfires on cylinders 2,4,6,8. Fuel pressure and spark check out ok.

They recommended performing a fuel injection system purge. They performed the service and the vehicle started better than normal for a few days. Then the vehicle experienced another delayed start and the check engine light is back on.

The vehicle did this after starting perfectly in the morning and again in the afternoon. After sitting for a couple of hours the extended start occurred.

On previous services coil packs for cylinders 2,3,5,6,7 have been replaced.

Can anyone offer a possible reason for the delayed start and misfires?

First thing I would do, is change the ignition capacitor, if not previously replaced. This can get a voltage drop across it, and cause low spark output from the coils when starting. The old one looks like a cube, new style is more rounded, I believe I've posted pics on the forums before, I'll check...

Misfires all on the same bank is odd, especially during starting, where almost everything is global(not bank specific) However, these engines will through erroneous misfire faults regularly, even if just one cylinder is to blame, do you have the P codes by chance?

See above thread for pics of capacitor.

Thank you for the information Dave.

I think the ignition capacitor was changed about 1 year ago when 5 of the coil packs for cylinders 2,3,5,6,7 were replaced.

Coil packs for cylinders 1,4,8 are original.

Vehicle has 109,000 kilometres / 67,000 miles.

MASS filter was recently changed too.

The dealer suggested the fuel pump could be the problem. They want $2000.00 to replace.

Any further assistance is greatly appreciated.

The fuel pump can easily cause an extended crank, as it contains the check valve to hold pressure in the rail, and low fuel pressure while cranking can cause misfires to be stored.

Before you have any work done, I would try turning the key on for about 3 seconds, then off, then back on for another 3 seconds, then cranking it over. If this takes care of the extended crank, a failing check valve is most likely your issue.

If the check valve is the only issue with the pump, you may want to try running some fuel system cleaner (I like BG 44k) through the tank and see if it 'cleans' up anything that may be causing the valve to stick. For best results in this, disregard the instructions on the can, and put it in on almost an empty tank, then add a couple gallons. I would try this a couple times(cleaner in tank, plus 2-3 gallons of gas, run til almost empty, and repeat)

Also, $2k is high for this repair, last I checked, I think parts were around 6-700, and labor should be no more then 3 hours (book time is 2.1 hours)

Dave - again than you for the advice - I really appreciate it.

I tried turning the ignition as directed. This had no impact on the starting of the vehicle.

I have not been able to find a source for the BG44K yet.

There does not seem to be a pattern to the delayed starting. It can start immediately after sitting overnight and then be delayed after having driven for several hours, left for an hour and then started again.

I'll continue to try and hunt down the BG44K.

Thanks - Gordon

Try this:

BG Findashop - Search for an authorized BG service center near you!

it looks like there are some new car dealers that stock it in your city.

Dave - I located a dealer that carried the BG44K and followed your directions.

Check engine light went out and so far no delayed starts. In fact, it appears to idle better too.

Thank you for the advice.

Default 2008 LR3 Misfires

Hi

im experiencing the same problem with my LR3 2008 model. Does the fuel system cleaner have to be BG 44K. I am in Botswana and dont have any distributors here.

Thanks

Tumelo
