Default 2006 Discovery 3 V6 petrol reduced engine performance when cold

Good Day All,

I was wondering if any of you old hands could help me out with a problem I'm having with my newly bought 2006 Discovery 3 V6 petrol 130 000km.

I have had the car at a Land Rover specialist and he is as confused as me, so I thought I'd try the hive mind to see if any of you had run into this before.

When starting the engine cold it runs very rough and jerky (missing) it will then pop up with a reduced engine performance (drives like half the engine disappeared). Once you get it up to temp (half way on the temp gauge, not before) you can turn it off and on again and the error disappears and it pulls like a train and is incredibly smooth. This only works if it is well warmed up. The strange thing is that it logs no faults despite the reduced engine performance coming on while we had it plugged in. This fault used to be very intermittent but now happens every time I start the car when cold. Might be worth mentioning that where I live it never really gets below 10 degrees C at night, so not "Really cold".

The mechanic has tried Oxygen sensors, Mass airflow sensors, Fuel pressure, Air leak check, Plugs and many other things with no luck.

I really love this car and am desperate for it to work. My wife is giving me that "what where you thinking look".

Any assistance would be most appreciated.

Kind Regards

Ant

have you checked the temp sensor that reports back to the ecu?

guessing you already swapped the battery out?

cold weather + a dying battery could be it

Thank you for the quick responses.

We haven't tried the battery. The starter seems to turn over well and the start is easy so I assumed the battery is healthy but I will ask.

I did ask about the temp sensor and the water one seemed to be giving a sensible reading as well as the outside air temperature one.

Are there other temp sensors that report to the ecu and are any of them particularly failure prone? I ask so I can make some sense when I talk to the mechanic.

Thanks again

Ant

A bit of feedback from the front,

A friend recommended that I try running some injector cleaner through the motor and it seems to have worked.

I will go out on a limb and say the truck is running better than ever.

So far I have only put 500km on her since the "issue" but all seems well.

Read somewhere that this ford V6 had injector issues?

Thanks for the suggestions and will report back If she coughs again.

regards

Ant
