Default Check Engine light = CATS

So my CEL light is on, and my mechanic says it is due to the catalytic convertor(s) gone bad. He said it is crazy expensive to replace this. Is there a work-around on this so I can get the CEL light off? Smog tests aren't an issue in Texas.

Does this mean you don't have an IIDTool to check on the condition yourself?

There are extensions for the O2 sensors you can get; that could be a work-around. I wouldn't do it, but....you might.

That's correct, I don't have a tool. Frankly, this is a $5000 car, so I don't mind doing work arounds to get the CEL light off. I've told my daughter that if your temps are OK and the tires have air in them, don't worry about it.
