Default Coolant Leak - Water Pump?

Hi Guys,
I have been seeing that the coolant level was down and after refills and some time the same issue. Las week I changed the motor oil and I found fresh coolant on the metal shield that covers the motor underneath the car.

btw -- I have 2005 LR3/HSE 88k

After further investigation I found residues of coolant that seems to be coming from the water pump pulley, my guess, check the following picture.

https://plus.google.com/u/0/photos/1...08244937794226

1- Am I correct to think that there is a leak from the water pump?
2- Is it smart to try to fix this issue with K-Seal™ Permanent Coolant Leak Radiator Repair?

Thanks in advance, Roberto

1. Water pumps as a rule tend to leak out the front, which gets on the pulley. Of course they can also leak out the gasket on the rear, but that is easier to see. When pumps leak out the front the bearing can begin to wear, and pump will wobble as you look at the belt while running at idle. Once you can see wobble it is chewing up metal inside the pump and circulating it in the cooling system.

2. Kseal is not a good idea for this, it is a seal that moves vs a fixed gasket. Kseal and similar products are "last ditch efforts" and "get me home" tricks.

3. Water pump not too hard for DIY. I'll post some pages from the LR3 shop manual so you can see if you want to tackle it. Some variation for 4.0 vs 4.4 motors.

thanks for the feedback!

I will check if pump wobble and maybe take a video if I have doubts about what I see.

Thanks again, Roberto

You can also rent/borrow a cooling system pressure tester from auto parts stores. It pumps up a steady pressure of say 15 PSI in the cooling system. Sit back for 30 minutes and the leaks will show up. Easier than dodging a moving fan that is blowing the drops away.

My RRS with 70k (as of yesterday!) has been doing the same thing for some time now. I'm holding back on the fix since she's got a 100k mi warranty but it DOESN'T cover leaks. I'll try to convince them that it's not really a leak, but rather a waterpump (bearing) FAILURE which just so happens to result in leaking coolant.

are you sure its not the coolant hose or the egr cooler above the stuff under the engine cover?
that really isn't a coolant pump, its just for the fan.

Hi, wondering if you were able to find out the root cause of the issue. I tried the pressure test and I tried it for long time and still not a clue from where it is leaking.

Gentleman, greetings from 13-degree hudson valley NY where I'm In the Middle of replacing my water pump and I'm stumped.

I was worried about the fan and all that , and sure enough took me a few stabs but it was off In three minutes the belt that is closest came off, and I began removing the bolts on the pulley where the fan came off of.

Well, bolts came off just fine but pulley will not.

Second part or this is: I honestly don't see the water pump back there. Am I in the wrong place?

I anticipated only removing the front belt. Is the pump elsewhere ? Little worried about removing that rear belt as it looks a bit intimidating to me and the routing is just too much for my small mind.

If I do need to remove that rear belt, anyone know if I can just sort of move it out of my way and still get to the water pump with enough room to clean up any gasket material and install the new one ? Thanks guys!

How did this turn out?

Changed the oil yesterday and looks like the coolant is weeping from behind the water pump.
Wondering how hard a job it is.

Also thinking might as well change all the hoses and thermostat housing since it will be drained down.
