Default Coolant Preference

Just curious what coolant/antifreeze everyone uses. I can basically only get Prestone and Peak locally. Prestone offers a Dexcool option which is nice.

Any OAT based will be fine.

I’ve used Dex in the past but nowadays, after flushing and replacing the heater core, use Mannol as its price per liter is significantly lower.

I’ve been polling some of my friends, general consensus is dexcool should be changed every 3-5 years to avoid the dreaded sludge clogged heater core.

I use Prestone Dexcool (says for GM vehicles on it) for my 4.4L V8. Around here a bottle of concentration is about $12.00 USD. Like any fluid, I tend to change it early for one reason or another. I think my stuff is a couple years old now but I have to replace radiator so I will put all new in.

Yeah, I was going to add that with the “normal” way of things going one ends up replacing a thermostat housing or some hose here or there one might as well replace all the coolant at such time. Or if not all, a lot of it is exchanged at such a time whether intentional or not.
So one usually doesn’t have to worry about “5 years” or “10 years” disclaimers that much…😂😎

Prestone GM Approved DEXCOOL is what I ended up getting. It’s been two days since I changed my water pump, still dripping coolant hopefully just from what spilled out of the engine when removing the pump. Otherwise I still have a leak from somewhere above the oil cooler.
