Default head gaskets

I love my 2005 Landrover LR3. Bought it used for good price(I thought!) However, have had lots of problems. Just spent $3000 on bearing failure: tie rods, brakes, strut mounts, etc. Now another issue. The LR3 air quit working and then the temperature went up. Lost speed up hill and I stopped. We had it towed and now we are told the head gaskets need replacing. Minimum $4000. Anyone have words of wisdom? I am on fixed income but I love, love, this vehicle. If I don't have it fixed, can I sell it for anything to someone that might be able to work on it? It is in good condition, otherwise. Thanks.

Sounds like you lost coolant and it went into self protect and shut down. Where is the coolant leak would be my first question. My 2nd question is what bearing did you have replaced at $3k price tag?

oh and welcome to the forum

The coolant link is in the reservoir. They filled it up and it spewed out like geyser after running lr3 and it became hot.

To properly diagnose a blown head gasket they need to do a leak down test.

I am not sure how familiar you are with the shop looking at it or how competent they are, so they might just be jumping straight to head gasket.

Could be if they are not familiar with how to bleed one that you just have air in the system. I would want that diagnosis confirmed before I dumped that kind of money

Yes, this is a very reputable foreign and classic repair shop. They have always shown themselves to be very honest and knowledgeable, unlike the dealership. Thanks for info. We can't work on it, so I guess we have to sell it as is, and I can't imagine why anyone would want it like that, or just get it fixed.
