Default how to remove lr3 gas tank

This is one of the easiest gas tanks I have ever removed

Try to be under 1/2 tank of fuel

chock front wheels, jack up vehicle and using heavy duty jack stands or 6x6 cribbing block rear of vehicle up in the air by frame

Remove spare tire

Remove drive shaft heat shield think nit was like 3 bolts and 2 nuts all 10 mm

Place a good floor jack under middle of tank

Place drain pan under fill neck at rear of tank, undo hose clamp , pull neck some gas may come out


Next there is a large line with yellow disconnect above diff, press yellow, wiggle and pull

Next is a line on charcoal canister above diff, you access it from spare tire area my finger points to it

Next unhook them from this black plastic bracket, you will need to fish these out as tank is dropped ESP the charcoal canister one that loops around, here is bracket

Next you will see white clips on side of tank they hold wire harness and some tubing , in clip them

Unbolt 6 bolts on skid plate 13 mm. This is what holds tank in

one bolt in middle by drive shaft may be retained on skid plate, you must also unhook the plastic line clipped onto the skid plate there

Lower tank, I found something to cover the gas fill

pull lines down in back you unhooked, unplug sending unit harness, it should be a spot facing rear you squeeze and pull it off, use dielectric grease in plug for reinstall

All that's left are 2 lines in front

Use extreme caution system is under pressure gas sprays out of this line it is quichk disconmect squeeze twist pull

Now just hook something into rear hole in ski plate and drag it out the back

There are 2 8mm bolts and 2 plastic push pins to remove this plastic guard, once removed tank lifts out of the skid plate

sorry no pics for sender as we swapped the whole tank as a unit


For reinstall I recommend draining tank , we pushed open the fill neck flap with a twig and dumped into buckets easily

Also get tank into place and jack up rear part way put those 2 rear lines in place then jack up tank rear till you can get the rear bolt started, helps get rest of tank aligned easier

Unseen one has noted the line of grease on the tank as needing the dirveshaft rebuilt, also my carrier bearing is bad good time to check while the heat shield is off
