Default Key Fob and Gap Diagnostic

I’m trying to program a new replacement key with the gap diagnostic tool. I have my battery connected to a battery tender to ensure the battery has proper voltage. When I start the programming operation it goes through the usual prompts, after the “program all keys including new ones” (to which I select ‘yes’) it prompts me to restart engine. If I let the command time out it displays operation failed error O7. If I start the engine the command displays: initializing ecus, then “turn key to position 1 and then displays operation failed E3

as a check to make sure I’m getting proper communication, I tried scanning for ecus with the gap tool and it would only successfully scan with the key in position 2. Is this normal?

Yeah, you need the systems online for it to scan for ECUs. During key programing it wants you to start the engine to validate the key then you turn the engine off but you dont turn the key all the way off obviously. There are four positions with having the key inserted being position 0, then you have position 1 which is the first dent and lets you power the radio and such. Position 2 brings everything online including the cluster. Position 3 is starting which of course springs back to position 2. Maybe double check the instructions, its a very simple process but also very simple to mess up if you do a step wrong.

I’ve been double checking everything and running through the process. The error message appears before I have time to turn the key to position 1.

Gap suggested a hard reset.

will keep everyone updated.

Is the tool updated? Mine is at version 4.0 IIRC, it needed an update after I hadn't used it during the Bronco era.

According to the gap updater app on my desktop it is the latest one. I went ahead and overwrote the firmware with the latest just to make sure. Didn’t make a difference.
