Another LR3 key question
So I bought a LR3 today. One key.
From what I understand, I can have a used key cut for my car at a key shop locally, and then program an existing FOB with a “Gap” tool, but only after the fob is erased. Does all this sound accurate? If so ...
1. Where would one pick up second hand hey fob?
2. Is there someone that puts new batteries in these?
3. To where would you send one to get “erased” for reprogramming?
4. From where does this “gap” tool come? Is there a certain model I need?
Is this all more costly than simply getting a copy at the dealer? They are quoting $475 for the whole exercise.

1 - You can go used authentic. There was an eBay seller that had a ton of them that were erased. Not sure if they are still available.
2 - Anyone that can solder. The hardest part of the process is getting the shell open, its glued shut and one has to be pretty aggressive. You CAN damage the board if not careful. Easiest method is to rip off the rubber button covers then start cutting the plastic. Of course this means you need a new shell which can be had for about $5 USD. I did replace my battery, you need a specific Panasonic one I think.
3 - Not sure and I do not think the GAP tool can erase keys... cool if it could.
Other option is to pick up cheap keys for the LR3 that have all the electronics inside. MANY do not use rechargeable batteries, just regular batteries, so heads up on that. But I do recall in another thread someone said stye found a maker that produced ones with rechargeable batteries that were also very affordable. Around $20 I think. This is the route I would take. I did buy a bunch of shells, the new ones snap and secure together with a single screw. No clue. They have a rubber gasket inside. They do seal well as I accidentally washed mine. I opened it up right away and there was no water inside.

While alternatives seem doable, there’s still some what-ifs, so I ponied up $300 and ordered a new key from the dealer today. They want $175 to program it when it arrives, and i live 4 hours away. I’m going to call around and see if any independent euro shops in Amarillo have a GAP tool that can get it programmed.
Have a peek at https://landroverforums.com/forum/lr...acement-88936/ and contact Abran Abeyta (on this forum), apparently he knows someone who erases the EEPROMs in keys, thus enabling them to be reprogrammed. I used a GAP IIDTool BT to program a new key I purchased on Amazon, had a working key to start, and the Panasonic replacement rechargeable battery I used was a VL2330. Biggest problem I had was getting the "sidewinder" style key cut, apparently Ford dealers can do it but mine didn't want to for whatever reason...

Autologic and GAP can. Recently I coded a used, non erased, remote to an LR4 using GAP!
