Default LR3 4.0 V6 thermostat actuation method

Hello there
can anyone tell me how the plastic thermostat thingy on the V6 4.0l Petrol works?
from the looks of it, it seems as if it normally creates a bypass for the coolant, then when cooling is required it blocks up and forces fluid to the top end of the radiator.
If my observations are correct, how does it operate internally, what do the other little pipes do?

It operate like any other thermostat. Also there is nothing involved in forcing fluid to a top of a radiator, that would imply the radiator if full of air?
