Default LR3 replacement shock absorbers (inserts)

Is it possible to replace just the shock absorber inserts? I thought a search would bring something up, all I found was a video of a guy chopping a strut apart. The design makes it look possible.

I have found that by the time the struts were weak, it was probably time to replace the air bags too.
But if the bags are good and you want an upgrade go with the above recommendation.

I searched, and will keep on searching, but so far nothing to confirm it can be done without issues/special tools. I did find a thread on Bilstein, but it was about installing them as complete units.

The service manual does not list any special tools required to service the air spring.

But it was in the system description section, not the suspension section

Well I ordered new inserts. $149 retail, my price $27 - so you can see why I wanted to give this a try. But this is for rears only. Seems I need a re-seal kit from LR. I assume thats a series of o-rings, but I need to locate that kit. I probably wont even attempt this project til spring and by then I might just buy the airbag part separately and build them up. The new airbags when sold separately (no insert) come with new o-rings. And I will save a lot over getting the complete units.

Nope, still in the box. What they send are for a coil conversion only, so no-go. Oh well.
