I finally managed to get the transmission level checked by a landrover mechanic and found out it was low on fluid by 1 quart. It shifts lot smoother now. But i still have the issue of downshifting and upshifting at the same time with a violent jerk between 4-5. Happens when I’m trying to overtake or increase speed a little more than usual. Seems to shift fine at heavy throttle. Happens rarely but when it does whole truck jerks. Also have the slow shift into reverse at startup. About 2.5 seconds to shift. R - D shifts right away. Mechanic shop tells me i need a rebuild. I drove 100 miles yesterday and it shift like a brand new transmission which makes me think its a electrical issue.



Not sure if related but i had the F error show up on Friday which went away after restarting. I replaced a rear side marker light as i read it could cause that. Havnt had the error yet.

 

The F on dash can be for anything so need the codes read, if they just did a top up then i suggest you do a flush or at least a couple of drain and refill cycles.
The shift issues i believe are down to the valve body and solenoid seals failing which doesn't require a full rebuild, there have been a few posts on fixing these so i'd do a search and read up before committing to any work on the trans.

 

i have not had the F show up yet ever since. I had a full flush done less than 20k miles ago. I was hoping it will be something a bit simpler than a full rebuild. Does failing solenoids show transmission shudder when put in reverse? I have a small vibration every time i put in reverse.

 

Get a GAP diagnostic tool and you'll be able to read the solenoid amperage. Failing solenoids are a common problem.

 

After searching online and comparing symptoms it seems like my solenoids are bad. i will be replacing the solenoids along with the seals this weekend. That's kinda my last resort anyway. has any one done this before? it seems like a pretty straight forward job. one question i have is do i still have to remove the exhaust to remove the valve body if i upgrade to a metal pan?

 

i meant will i be able to remove valve body without taking off the exhaust?

It's under "Select Live Values" then "Transmission" then "Pressure control solenoid" select solenoid 1 through 6 driver. You can then see the live amperages as the solenoids open and close.
