Guys, I need some advice. Purchased a 2007 LR3 HSE two weeks ago. Very nice truck with 69K miles. Dropped it off today for oil change a local Land Rover dealership. On the way, I noticed a loud noise coming for transmission. I asked them to check it out in addition to changing oil. I get the dreaded call, "how long have you had this truck?"

Service guy tells me that front and back differentials need or be replaced ( that's what was causing the noise), in addition to a few other things. Total cost for all work is $7K.

He is working in the final service report ( I have not seen it yet because I'm out of town until Friday), so I can return to the dealership that sold it to me. I'm not sure what, if anything, they will do. Here's my question...

Shouldn't the transmission/differentials withstand 70K miles? Wouldn't Land Rover have some type of warranty like a 100k?

Attached please find maintenance schedule from LR3 shop manual. See page 12. You are just at the time the ETM differential would be serviced (5 years - 75,000 miles) - everything else is years away by the book. IMHO doing at 1/2 the book interval never hurt anything except short term wallet thickness.

Attached is a page that describes the 4 year 50,000 mile warranty. Stinks, vehicles half the price have double the warranty.

There might be a recall involved. Dealer would know. And would have told you.

Had anyone serviced the diffs and such and drained fluid but not replaced it properly? May have issue with them. Perhaps the selling dealer as part of vehicle prep for re-sale (seems like not, as not scheduled yet). But there is a temp sensor on the rear diff, however, if empty, may not have been able to get a bad reading if no fluid there to conduct heat to sensor.

Or tender mercies of the dealer. You never know.

The spec for diff fluid is Castol 75W90. Some would replace it with heavier weight fluid, like 85W150. And burn an offering to the Rover gods.

Right about now that extended warranty would have come in handy. Maybe dealer 1 will still sell it to you.
