Default LR3 V6 Question

Well the dealer up here has con vinced the wife to test drive the LR3 V6 (she currently has a freelander) but I was wondering, does the V6 also need at least 89 octane (like the V8) or can it run on the lower octane gas? The dealer was claiming that if use regular gas it will void the warranty.

Thanks

yes, follow manufacturer's requirement. some engines are required to run at their stated minimum octane. If used at less than recommended, engine will knock and this can cause damage. i would advise to strictly follow manufacturer's recommendation during the warranty period.

I currently have the V6 LR3 and I have been putting the premium fuel in. I learned my lesson on my 04 Disco. Gas prices were so high that I started putting regular and plus gas in. Eventually, terrible fumes used to smell up the car and almost knock me out from the exhaust. I couldn't open my sunroofs and it blew in all the windows. Very strong odor and fumes. I would take it in for service but I couldn't tell them I thought it was from my cheap gas because it will void the warranty. Be very careful. By the way, the V6 is no better on gas than the V8.

Hi Everyone,

New to your forum. A few thoughts on octane and fuel.

According to manual 87 is the minimum and putting it in your tank will not void the warranty. 91 is recommended in one part of the manual, but in the tech specs part of the manual the requirement is listed as 90. Also, according to the manual, gas with 10% ethanol is allowed, which is what we use regularly in our LR3 and what we also used in our XC-90 (same fuel requirements). Regular gas with 10% ethanol is rated at 90 octane and costs the same price as 87 octane. At least it does here in Canada (Mohawk gas stations).

We have used 89 in both vehicles without problems and even used 87 octane in our XC-90 on a few occasions when nothing else was available - haven't tried 87 on the LR3 though we might have to when road trip season comes.

My V6 runs fine (no knocking) on 89 but drops power and more importantly mileage.

Exactly. The "void the warranty" BS is common for dealers, however, our engines will do justfine. Not great, but fine. From the $ perspective, the saving are minimal, if any.
