I'm looking at picking up this LR3 https://lakeland.craigslist.org/cto/...620969578.html The owner said that while driving down the highway the light came on so he pulled over and the thermostat housing was broken. He had it towed to the dealership where they replaced the thermostat and then told him that the head gaskets were bad. I don't know much about these engines except they are supposed to be less prone to overheating than my D2 so is this most likely just replace the head gaskets and have the heads machined or are these engines more likely to suffer additional damage from overheating?

I be concerned why the engine wouldn't crank over as stated in the ad. If the tech was right and it has bad head gaskets the engine could be hydrolocked, which is where there is coolant that has seeped into the cylinder and wont allow the engine to turn over. You could remove the spark plugs and try to bar it over to confirm. If coolant shoots out the plug holes, well, then that answers that question. Also, pull the engine oil dipstick to see if the oil looks milky which would indicate coolant in the oil. Is it possible the engine seized from overheating? Could it be a coincidental electrical/starter motor issue? Sounds like a gamble.
Nice looking LR3 though... well except for the dash pad...
