Default Patched a split CV boot with bike tire patch - wish me luck

This will be my 3rd split CV boot on my 2009. I opt to replace the entire half shaft when this happens and I have one on the way from Lucky 8 (thanks guys).
But I’m leaving on a 2500mi road adventure and can’t take care of this in time. The joint sounds fine, though I’m not sure how long I’ve been running it like this.

I pumped grease in the boot, not full but a good amount.
I then de-greased the area and roughed up the rubber with sandpaper.
I used some vulcanizing cement and a standard bicycle tire patch which stuck way better than I thought it would. Then for good measure I slapped a few small pieces of Gorilla Tape over it.
Hell, I’m even considering squirting a layer of RTV gasket maker over this mess.

What’s your take on this? Will it last the duration? Hopefully looking at straight days of dry weather but you never know. Typically I wouldn’t be concerned especially when I have a new axle on the way - but if the joint blows while I’m away, I won’t be near anybody who can fix it for me.

And for those wondering - no, I don’t wheel this truck and it’s never been off road as far as I know. My indy shop hadn’t even replaced a boot/shaft until my first one late last year. To have 2 then 3 is crazy. I guess mine just had some $hitty rubber?

Well, wish me luck - not sure how worried I need to be.

I've seen worse.

I would have used a layer or two of mastic tape rather than duct tape, but you'll probably be OK.

I would just check on it at every fuel stop....

...very strange that you've had so many boot failures. I've had one in ten years (knock wood). I wonder what is causing that.

CV's should start to click first I'd imagine before they 'go out' -- The boots are important as they hold the grease in place and the grime out -- They're not really the working part there, so to say.

I wouldn't be too concerned on the trip. I'd check it occasionally, but if you check it and it's open again, what would you do anyway?

You'd tape it some more...and know that when you get home you'll need to actually replace the boot.

They used to make a split boot that could be put in place without dismantling the axle, and then glued together. Haven't seen them for some time now but as long as you got everything clean enough for the glue to stick, it should be OK.

Yes - it blew my patch shortly after liftoff. But, it was a $h1tty job. I should have known it wouldn't hold since I didn't completely wrap 360º around the patch on the boot. Centrifugal force is strong

The self-fusing silicon tape covered with 2 rounds of Gorilla Tape has held (knock on wood) for over 1000 miles, dusty trails, Montana heat, and a small flash flood in Wyoming. I did pick up another roll of tape today for the 2nd leg of this journey, but hope I won't need it.

I have a new GKN / Spicer half shaft waiting for me in Seattle to put this right once and for all.
