Strange whine and overheat
2005 LR3- took it to an event in central FL that included deep water, mud, silt and multiple recoveries. Story for another day. Now I have multiple oil and gear case leaks, etc. LOL. We drove her the 5 hours back to AL from event and really no major issues except an incessant whine in engine compartment and temp gauge pegging out once we got home. Took it to shop and they replaced thermostat, coolant rez, and radiator. Drove it home from shop and still have the whine, and the belt tensioner froze up. Replaced tensioner and serpentine belt last night, checked everything else I could check and it all seemed fine- got in it today and still have the whine, and engine temp gauge pegged out again in traffic and engine light came back on. I can smell coolant, I think, but reservoir doesn't seem to have leaked. Any ideas? I will upload a couple videos I just took. You can hear the whine. Kinda sounds like power steering but it seems fine. Temp gauge pegs out after truck sits idling for 5-10 minutes....
Mud/dirt/water in any of the pulleys will cause the bearings to fail and result in a whine. With the belt off, recheck all the pulleys for play or free wheeling.
With a coolant loss after overheating, you need to check a few things. Pressurize the system and look for leaks. Do an exhaust gas test on the coolant via the radiator.
Id expect your mechanic to know to check these things. Did they provide any notes?

Yeah, I would second the water pump and or belt related to the water pump. The alternators do not like contamination either which is why one cleans them with fresh clear water after heavy contamination, to flush stuff out before it gets baked in. Usually none of this happens though unless you were "bro splashing" like some red-neck fool. If that is the case then the truck was clearly not setup for such things, like proper skid plates, etc.
There is a lot of stuff spinning under there. Is the whine RPM dependent, or constant no matter the RPM? Have you tried starting the rover without the serp belt on? I wouldn't run it long that way, but if you do and the whine is gone you've narrowed your focus down to things like the water pump, alternator, idler, etc.
Given your other issues, as others have mentioned, it sounds logical that your problem might be the coolant pump.

Yeah, it is RPM dependent. I changed out a tensioner (and serp belt while I was at it), thinking that was it, but it still whines. AND stupidly returned the fan removal tool to a friend who lives an hour away, so here I go again.... I do think it's a water pump. Constant whine, and different whine at different speeds. Only seems to overheat when sitting. And I replaced the radiator a couple weeks ago, thinking that was it....
