Default T-Case Dying

Ugh....worst case scenario has come true. Bad bearing in my transfer case ('06 HSE, 232k miles). I live north of Seattle, near Everett, WA.

Anyone know of a reputable transmission/diff/4x4 shop that can do a rebuild?

Has anyone replaced their T-Case? New or used? Any suggestions on part sourcing?

Any experience or advice at all would be appreciated.

Thanks all,
-Houm

I swapped my transfer case almost 1 year ago.

Took the gamble and grabbed one out of a salvage yard. It's been working fine.

Biggest tip is to remove the center console. There are 2 bolts on the top that are extremely hard to get to even with the Land Rover special tool for access to it. A very similar tool can be purchased at Napa. Part # TA38113M

Other tools you will need:
13mm ratcheting spanner
13mm short ratcheting spanner
Transmission jack.....the ability to raise the transfer case straight up vs. a standard floor jack is well worth the price
Set of E-Torx sockets to remove the drive shafts.

Buy the transmission gear shifter selector bush kit, you will need to remove the transmission cable from the transmission to be able to remove the selector to get access to the 2 top bolts. That hardware is worn out by the time you reassemble everything.

Roverlandparts.com sells them for $1,995 rebuilt.

The transfer case is a Magna-Steyr DD295. It was used in 2005-2013 RRS, LR3, and LR4. You can find them on ebay for $300-500+, shipped. I think the rebuild probably Isn’t too hard. A mechanic I trust recommends North Seattle Transmission. I’ve not used North Seattle Transmission, so I cannot vouch for their work myself. A rebuild is probably going to be a time and materials job, so it could get expensive. Send me a DM if you need a hand.

@keninnc - Those are some great tips I have not seen before. Mine is leaking so I have to swap mine out too. I heard dealing with the uppers was a pain, never heard about going in from the top. I will have to try that!

@houm_wa - Have you considered a DIY rebuild? You could pick up a used one and rebuild it yourself, them just swap em around. That is what I plan to do, eventually.. Around here a t-case can be had for well under $200 used.

Yes, it's the shaft bearings that go out generally. Not a big deal swapping just those out.

THANK YOU guys, so much!

I have located a used one, recycled from a wrecked 2010 RRS. As you guys state it's about $300 shipped. I'm just making sure now that I can find someone to install it because I do not have the wrenching ability to DIY. If North Seattle Transmission will do it, I'd go with them just to install it. Maybe they can rebuild mine and then I can sell it....?

Cheers!!!

Or you could just save it to have on hand. Don't you have a whole fleet of LR3s houm?
