Default transfer case

A few days ago my 2006 LR3 started making a weird thumping noise that sounds and feels like it's coming from under the front seats. It happens when I'm coming to a stop or putting the car into drive or reverse. It does not happen when I accelerate. I can also hear it slightly when I make a turn. I took it to the shop and they said it might:confused be my transfer case? I heard that this is very expensive to repair. I'm not sure I would repair it given the thousands of dollars I have already poured into this money pit. I have had nothing but problems with this car from the time we bought it 10 years ago.

Where are you located, maybe another member can suggest an alternative shop for a second opinion.

You can buy a used T case with a warranty for $400-$500(rebuilt around $1500-$1800), Install at a shop should be around $600-$1000.

Or you can give up on your LR3 and sell it to me for cheap...

I am in a small East Texas town. I would love to sell it!

Before I jumped to T-case I'd suspect the driveshaft center bushing. You can't see it without pulling a heat shield out (easy to do) but you can grab the shaft by hand and see if it seems to move around freely. It's a 2 piece design and the center support tends to tear away.

A new part is about $100, though LR says it's not serviceable. I did a write up a couple months ago showing step by step how to do it though. A factory driveshaft is around $600 as I recall. Or if you want to save some money and don't wheel the truck hard I have a new aftermarket one I can sell you for $125 (about half the cost of new)

Check it out - it's a far more common failure than the Tcase, and much cheaper.
