Looks really good and exactly the same colour and wheels as my own LR3. I suspect the weather where you live helps with its overall condition. I have to deal with a lot of salt on the roads and under body coating is a frequent need here. With only 79K miles I would suggest there is plenty of life left in it and unless you really want an LR4, I would keep it. The one downside is the 19" wheels and like anyone who has them, tyre choice is very limited.

Ive only got 79k miles on it and cant decide if I should get a lower mile LR4 or just run this one into the ground for another 10 years. Any opinions appreciated...and any ideas what a 2009 with 79k miles would sell for?

I'd keep it. At 79k it's just a baby....continue taking good care of it and it will last forever. What's the real upside to getting an LR4? 75HP?

@spannermonkey and @houm_wa - thanks. Its in great shape. The only (unexpected) issues were I had to replace the front wheel bearings last year and the sunroof drain. I finally sorted the drain after 6 months of messing with it. I knew I would need to replace the compressor and lower control arms around 75k. I was luckily able to rebuild the compressor myself. The lower control arms look like too big a project without a lift, so I will have my indy do that.

I was thinking of selling for an LR4 for 3 reasons:

1. the LR4 interior is nicer...although with two young boys the LR3 interior is more utilitarian
2. im worried about the depreciation hit at 100k miles. I saw a 2009 LR3 with similar miles selling for $18k while older ones with 100k+ miles were selling for around $12k. Looks like a $6k hit. On the other hand, ive seen some LR4s with 50k miles selling for $25k, which is what I paid for the LR3 3yrs ago at 50k miles.
3. lastly, I HATE the new Discovery design so will keep the LR3 or a LR4 for many years to come and give it to the kids when they get their license.

Here is what I think about your itemized reasons:

1. I used to think the LR4 interior is nicer. I like the wood and love the door panels, but the dash material, once I really got close to it and touched it....felt rubbery and I didn't like it. I like the big chunky ***** on the LR3 and have decided the interior is nicer on the LR3 or "even" now.
2. Depreciation? If you are keeping it forever and ever, then it's a curve down to $0 (theoretically) so who really cares? I'm going to die before my Rover does, and then my kids are going to cruise around in Dad's old Rover and remember me. Who cares about depreciation if you commit to keeping it?
3. Agree. The D5 is fugly and it is not the beast that the LR3/4 is. I'm thinking about buying another LR3/4 as a project rig or a RRC. They just aren't making them like they did. I surmise that the LR3/4 is going to become yesterday's Defender. Last of the finest.

So keep your LR3 AND get an LR4!!!

You're welcome. I'm a problem-solver.

Ha! Well played, sir.

Re D5, yea my local dealer in SF said it was a dog and the LR4 was becoming a "collectors item". He said low mile 2016s were selling at near original sticker price and he couldn't keep any LR4 for more than a few days.

I bet that's true...I don't see a lot of LR3s on the sales sites either like CL or cars.com. I have also read that LR4s have some engine issues that the 4.4s don't have. So there's that. I think the LR3 has a more rugged exterior as well. I like the molded fender flares over the painted ones.

Hey, off-topic...do locals in the bay area refer to SF as "...'frisco" or is that frowned upon?

Yesterday to me but today for you guys, still looking at roof rack options so for now have a pair of Rhino heavy duty bars and fitted my 2.5m x 2.5m awning to them, ideally need a 3rd bar but it works for now.

Never heard it used, so likely would be frowned upon :-)
