Howdy All,

I'm wondering if anyone here knows where I can get some more of the long screws used to tighten down the engine air filter housings. They look like this:



Mine have become stripped over the years so I'd like to replace them with the OEM ones (or the exact same spec but better material would be ok too). I'd like to buy enough that I don't have to think about it again, so maybe a dozen or so.

Also, how often do you guys replace the engine air filters? I've been driving the LR4 less lately and the ones I just replaced did not look dirty at all, but since it was the 1 year mark I replaced them anyways.

I think the air filter boxes are somewhat similar to the LR3 in that those screws simply secure into the plastic of the lower shell. A rather poor design (the LR3 was meant to have metal nuts imbedded with fine thread screws...... but costs savings I guess). Anyway... In my case my plastics were stripped and I really hated the Philips heads. So I bough 10mm course thread screws that were a little bigger than the stock ones. Then I drilled the plastics. The upper cover I drilled large enough for the screw to just slip through. the lower plastics mainly to clean out so the new larger screws would get a nice bite. I find it much easier now to use the 10mm socket on them for removal and being stainless, they will not corrode.

 

I got a few new ones at the local hardware store almost for free. Doesn’t help you since we’re rather far away. Just go to the local ACE Hardware or similar and show them what you need. I’d be surprised if they don’t stock similar ones. Also, get ones that are galvanized, the LR “metal” is a sorry excuse.

I change air filters every oil change since the cost for Mann (an engine air filter is 12 euro…..) if yours is clean, did you look at the bottom of it? 😎 I mean, the air flow direction is from bottom to top through the filter toward the engine. So opposite of the cabin air filter, which is top -> bottom. I change that one, too, every oil change.

I get about two oil changes per year (roughly), I drive circa 20k km annually.

 

Ah, I get it and will go try to get some better screws rather than the OEM ones which I agree are ****e, they strip so easily.

Thanks for telling me on the air direction, I had it backwards! I'll look again how dirty they are. I don't drive this vehicle often (maybe 3-4,000 miles a year) but it sounds like I should just stick to the regular annual replacement when I do my oil change just to be on the safe side.
