LR4 Loud Wind Sound when Idle or Accelerating - blowing air up near front bumper
Thank you in advance for any answers.
Have 2014 LR4 SC V8 - $120K It's been a champ - no major issues other than typical fuel pump issues last year - that I took to a bad mechanic so it had to be fixed twice. But otherwise great - until I
had my oil changed a couple of weeks ago and it has been a little louder but today taking my kiddos to school it tarted sounding like a hurricane everytime I'd accelerate - got it home and major wind sound when it restarted it idle very loud - lifted the hood - air was blowing up at me towards the front bumper. I just put money on a new Defender which will be here in a few months - so I don't want to invest major dollars..
Symptoms:
Loud Wind Sound coming front of engine - both in idle and accelerating.
Higher RPM than normal
No change in fuel economy.
Not running hot
No leaks not a drop.
No orange pools at the bottom
No new lights
Slight oil smell but not over whelming
Small trail of white smoke by the time I got home from exhaust.
Any help really appreciated so I don't get taken again when I go to the mechanic.
Thanks!

Sounds like your engine cooling fan is coming on more than usual. It’s a solenoid actuated viscous clutch system. The question is why it’s coming on more than normal. It could be a problem with the fan clutch itself (not a big deal to change out the fan assembly - and not terribly expensive to buy as I recall). It also could be a problem with your AC system as one of the main jobs of the engine cooling fan is to cool the AC condenser right near the engine radiator. In fact, there is usually some ducting that diverts fan air directly to the condenser. If the condenser is hot, it signals the fan to kick in.
I’d start by shutting off the AC and driving it without for a little while - see if the fan is still roaring like you’ve been noticing. If that seems to fix the issue, you might check around the front bumper area - see if the spaces (especially around the condenser) are blocked up with leaves or what not, which could be causing the condenser to overheat. If it’s all clear, could be a problem with the AC system, but work on AC systems can be expensive. If the AC system is still cooling okay (or if turning off the AC doesn’t help resolve the issue), I’d maybe just swap out the fan assembly (clutch is part of the assembly) and see if that fixes the issue before doing anything else. The fans are known to have issues.

great assessment, I agree fan clutch is likely the culprit. you can buy a couple of fan removal tools, a long-handled wrench and another long-handled tool to keep the fan from spinning when pulling/pushing on the wrench. they make it very easy. they run about $60 for the pair. well worth t in my opinion. good luck. phil
That’s great news and thanks for posting back. Just FYI for others reading the thread, you also can get some of these tools on free rental from some auto parts stores - I know O’Reilly’s has them, and maybe others. They are “universal” - so the fit isn’t always great, but the price is right.
