No idea if this's relevant, but a couple of months ago, 2 years after the main dealer replaced the low pressure fuel pump for the known recall, I started seeing the P0089 DTC intermittently, some times multiple times per day and then nothing for 1,000 miles and then it would return again and then go away for a while and then return again.
Then a few weeks ago I made a stop after driving for about 80 miles and left the engine on, something I always do. But when I re-engaged the transmission the truck began shaking and DTC P02F0 appeared followed by cylinder 3 misfire. After sitting for 8 hours, started the truck and drove for 100 miles without the DTCs returning however a new DTC appeared P0420 - bank 1 catalyst.
A week later, still no issues other than P0420 coming and going intermittently. Then, whilst making the exact same route when the injector DTC appeared, it returned again. Let the truck sit all day and drove 100 miles with no incident. Drove several more days and hundreds of miles with no issue. Then yesterday after driving for about 3 miles, the shaking (misfire) and DTCs returned for P02F0. Returned home and let it sit overnight. This morning drove for about 2 miles and then the misfire and injector DTCs again.
The engine's done 184K miles on original injectors. Should I assume it's a faulty injector?
From what I can tell, cylinder 3 is the right rear. Anyone here done this service? Seems fairly straight forward, though I've heard horror stories regarding injectors breaking inside the head. Would this also be a good opportunity to replace the valve cover? I reckon with the coils, harness, fuel rail, injectors, plugs, etc. there's nothing else to remove other than the cover. Would you just replace the 4 gaskets or the cover too?
I'll add, though not helpful, bank 1 LTFT at the time of the first injector failure, wat at 51- problem is I can't recall if it was negative or positive but I think it was negative whilst bank 2 LTFT was at 0%.
Since the however LTFT 1 & 2 have remained in the 3% range.
So I've just performed a one by one test of all injectors via SDD, weirdly though SDD shows bank 1 numbers as 1 3 5 instead of 1 2 3 as shown in the workshop manual. Regardless, all injectors have passed the test. Of course this's an intermittent issue so perhaps it'll only be usefull to run the test whilst the misfire's occurring.
Really stuck here on what to do. I don't mind doing the work, but I dislike the idea of buying all new parts for bank 1 only to find the issue persists due to another cause though what that could be I've no idea.
Subscribed as very infrequently I have an engine "rumble" that I cannot pinpoint as well.
Though I throw a code for emissions... entirely out of the blue.
The problem went away for 2 days again but was able to get it to fail today and immediately ran SDD, DTC injector 3 circuit performance cylinder 3 misfire. Bank 2, injector 2 passed, bank 1 injector 1 passed, bank 2 injector 4 passed, bank 1 injector 3 failed conditions not met, bank 2 injector 6 passed, bank 1 injector 3 failed conditions not met and then SDD crashed. Started the whole process over again and ALL 6 injectors passed!!!! Started the engine and indeed running smoothly then started cylinder 3 misfire again. Ran the injector routine again all injectors bank 2 passed and all injectors bank 1 failed.
So I've got NO idea what's going on...
Still getting the P0089 low pressure fuel pressure too low as well.
Three new injectors, coils and plugs will be here in the morning so I'll change those out and hope for the best.
Went for another drive and failure again. Ran SDD and this time all injectors passed EXCEPT #5 in SDD (#3 in workshop & DTC) made a single faint click and failed. Plus a new DTC appeared, P0267-11 - injector circuit low voltage detected. Think this confirms the injector's the problem. Should know by tomorrow night...
IT was significantly easier to disassemble everything than anticipated, including removing the injectors. I did use the special tool and they popped out with little effort. Considering how many horror stories I've heard about Jags and Rovers, I anticipated the worst. Waiting on the overnight delivery of parts, the carrier may be delayed, but with everything ready to go, I reckon it'll take less than an hour to fit, reassemble everything and test drive.

Job done. Short test drive engine seems smoother and quieter and more responsive. Tomorrow I'll go for a 100+ mile drive and see what happens. Based on the condition of the RH injectors I reckon it's time to do the left side...
A few hundred miles done and no further injector/misfires, acceleration's definitely massively faster and smoother and a random rattle on acceleration which the main dealer could never identify's gone ( I thought it was knock but no one else could confirm). When I get to the LH side, I'm certain it'll be further improved. Interestingly, the spark plug wear and colour on all three was identical and perfectly normal even considering they had done 100K miles, but the injectors were a different story from 1-3, front to back the first was decent though tip erroded and 1 hole plugged, the second one was dirtier and of course the third failed one, pictured previously was the worst.
Some of the valve cover screws were a bit loose and so I tightened them. I had intended to replace the gaskets but realised the top row of screws are under the supercharger which I just had out only a couple of months ago, and five times in total over the last 4 years and really wasn't in any mood to tackle that again, plus I really need to do the bank 2 service, I reckon I'll save it all for then...
Now for the bad news, there's still a random roughness at low idle (620 RPM) which of course goes away at high idle (1100 RPM) and the bank 1 catalyst P0420 code which went away for a few hundred miles making me think it was gone due to new injectors has returned AND the P0089 low pressure fuel pump DTC keeps coming and going. Ugh...
But the worst of it's something completely new I've never seen, now the engine's randomly boiling over and out the expansion cap but I'll save that for a new thread...
