Curious to learn if any members of the Discovery/LR4 section of the forum have actually removed their OE side steps (also referred to as running boards) and had them refinished, i.e. power-coated. I actually like the side steps but don't overly care for the bright brushed aluminum finish they come supplied with. My key question being, can the ABS-type tread plate inserts be easily removed and reinstalled without damaging them. (re: LR does not appear to offer the tread plate inserts as a separate part item so before undertaking the removal, I thought I'd ask around here).
I have had my running boards on 14 Lr4 powder coated black. They look very good. Make sure they are powder coated properly because first time debris from road chipping paint was an issue.
The tread plate is can be removed while on or off the rover. I pulled the complete side step off after the first winter in Ohio because of rust on the bottom frame. It needed it again after the second winter. Stones and salt pepper it from the tires. You might find out the same will happen to your powder coating on the rub rail.
Changed my mind on working with the OEM steps and instead installed Prospeed's Rock & Tree Sliders which are of perfect fit and functional form. Next up, will be to add the ABS step inserts to the sliders and the optional skid plates while awaiting the release of their new Hidden Winch Mount and Bull-type Lamp Bar (together with the Warn Zeon 12-S Platinum)
if you live in an area where sand or gravel is common or an area that uses sand with salt mixture you will have a fair amount of pitting on the running boards from the sand blasting. unless you plan on doing a vinyl wrap or clearbra on top it would be a waste of money. IMO.
Iconcast, I don't, we live in the Southern USA, no salt and the sand is only on the beaches. But even if they do (get nicked, pitted, etc.) that will only mean I'm making use of them. While my post do not elude to serious use of this LR4, it will most certainly get its fair share of use and fun time abuse over time just like my previous LR3 which I had for the past 13 years.

Its starting to come together now and I'm really taking to the look and ruggedness of the new Prospeed Rock & Tree Sliders vs the OEM side steps the LR4 came with.
LR sump guard, Prospeed Essentials Rack and Rock & Tree Sliders. Prospeed Essentials Rack and Front Runner Swing Away Tire Carrier.
Okay so my running boards oem powder coated rotted out. How are your pro speed sliders. Are they suitable side steps/running boards? Where did you get them ?!
