Wow. I just looked those videos up on you tube. Thanks for that. But yeah wow those rover guys are morons. I can't believe some of the stuff those guys were doing.
That's not quite fair. What you're really saying is you don't need to modify the vehicle for additional capabilities. That much is fair. But there are plenty of things to do to prepare to make a 4000 mile trip successful. Having a maintained vehicle is just the start of it. I suppose if you had a Pelican case of cash and credit cards you could just figure out the rest along the way, but most people would prefer to prepare by taking along some things that will make the trip easier, safer, and more enjoyable.
The sleeping rack inside the truck with storage under it is a good idea.
If the temperatures you are expecting are low, I have used mobile one 0w40 with great success here ( this part of Ut gets to -25 regularly). It may develop oil leaks though.

If you are thinking of sleeping in the vehicle, replace the weatherstripping, at least around the rear tailgate and rear doors.
I got minor frostbite on my cheek last year going on the winter camp for scouts with my son. We slept in the back of my XJ and the weather strip was torn in a few spots. Add in a blizzard and negative temps Fahrenheit.

Well life gets in the way. I had to decide between 2 weeks on St Lucia w the wife or this trip. So I'll guess I'll work on my tan. Still needs to happen just gotta be pushed back. As a consolation prize I'll be going up to Utah twice this summer. That will give me a chance to try out some new parts. It will happen just next fall I guess.
the most important thing is your tyre pressure , you will need to lower it significantly to drive in snow , have some lighter fluid and a box of matches stand by for in case tires pop of the rim .... anti freeze coolant would be a must.... as for the rear locker , its an advantage ...
