There's a major difference between screw pin shackles. Stick with quality, like Van Beest green pin
or Columbus McKinnon
Quality alloy shackles have a 5:1 design factor, meaning that the WLL stamped on them is 1/5 of the load where they will begin to deform. The actual breaking load is typically a good bit higher than that. Many shackles you find at bix box stores, tractor supply, etc. only have a 3:1 design factor. Some are even less or not labeled at all.
Even though there's no real industry standard for winching, the generally accepted guideline is a 3:1 safety factor, so by using a quality shackle with 5:1 rating you can go a little smaller and still have a 3:1 safety margin.
