Electronic brake controller
You need to wire the controller under the dash direct to the battery with a 20 or 30 amp circuit breaker (per break controller install notes) inline that you can get from any RV parts dealer and to a good ground. Then run two wires to the rear, I used one gauge better (lower number) than the break controller instructions called for for safety, and I also used wire with a coating for outdoor use. I bought the wire at Lowe's off the wire rack where you can buy it by the foot. You are basically running two wires to the back to power the trailer brakes, and one to turn them on and off, IIRC.
I used the 4 pin universal trailer wiring converter for (5 wire to 4 wire) off the right rear tail light where the connector is normally for the D2, but the universal connector just used side connectors to the correct wires per the instructions for the 4 pin plug. I already had that wired for non-braking trailer hook-up. You need to make sure you get the universal kit to convert the separate signals (5 wire) from brake lights that the D2 has to the type the trailers uses (4 wire) which is a simple 4 wire where the signals use the same wire/light as the braking lights to power the signals one side at a time.
I mounted my brake controller over my left knee, and it is a little snug there. I then ran the wiring down the kick panel, down the driver's side under the door thresholds, back under the rear storage bin and into the space under the rear tail light that you can access through the plastic vent cover on the side of the interior trim, just inside the rear gate. You can work with it there, and you can drop it down to behind the bumper as well. I used the below trailer connector to simply plug in my 4 wire plug and add the trailer brake wires to the appropriate colored wires for this plug on the pig tail to now have trailer brakes on the large 7 flat pins in the large round trailer connector, and I can also still use the 4-pin plug as well. Also, note that I mounted this on the driver's side of the hitch receiver as to not to have to reach across the trailer tongue as I had to before. The 4-pin connector was installed by the previous owner on the passenger side of the receiver hitch. Brake controller and this connector together should give you all the wiring information you need to do it right. If I were going to do it all together, I would just wire it all on the driver's side rear tail light.
I used the same wiring converter as noted above to handle getting all the lights connected to the D2 lights in the rear tail light area, which is Hopkins Part# 46155.

Here is the brake controller I used, a Tekonsha Prodigy P2. I believe there are some videos of the installation process as well. The circuit breakers are also shown on this page that you need. They are less than $5 and very basic to install inline on the hot wire to the battery. I installed mine on the rear of plastic battery box in the D2. Again I used one gauge heavier wire than called for for my hot wire run to the battery for safety.
