When I was at SCARR last time Bill Burke was there teaching some classes. He suggested using less tan 100' of winch line because he said you rarely need that much, and you really need to extend a lot of line to get the full rated capacity of the winch. I don't remember the exact numbers, but I think he said like 65 or 75 feet was what he runs, and then he carries extensions if he needs to reach out further.

and thanks for that, too. I could not find an 85', just 50,75,100. I am going with 75' of 3/8" and I will grab a couple more extensions.

Synthetic line is easy to splice or add thimbles, etc. You could buy 100ft, cut it down, and make your own extension.

Viking Offroad Rope Splicing Kit- for 5/16" & 3/8"
I ordered this. have you used one? I ask because if I get a set of stuff to make repairs with no instructions, I will be lost (like when I tried to make a shirt in home ec.). I assume it will have some type of instructions, correct? I found online photos but no videos.

Not personally, but I saw Bill Burke using his. It probably comes with instructions. And there are some videos on YouTube of people getting by without a kit.
