All good info.
When pads are replaced they develop wear spots. You new pads will quickly mold into the prior wear spots which will make the pads wear more quickly. So...since most of the cost will be labor, I always change them out. Rotors are cheap today compared to 20 years ago. Lots of things I try and save money on...But hardly ever brakes..

That's actually why I don't replace the rotors - my labor cost is zero and the pads aren't too expensive.
So if the pads are only $100 per axle and I lose 25 percent of their life by not changing rotors, it's only costing me $25 extra.
I like doing my own service when I can.

No offence...but if I spend 70,000 plus on a vehicle I am not very worried about a couple hundred bucks...IF that, as when they have the wheels off that's 1/2 the labor cost.
Just sayin...

To Ponderosajack - 60k miles on a set of pads on the LR3 is amazing if I read that right!
It of course depends a lot on driving style and where you are driving. But On our LR4 we were lucky to get 20k on a set of pads. Mostly start stop town driving and it just ate brake pads...
Done nearly that on the disco V and all good so far

On just pads vs pads and rotors, LR dealers seem to want to do rotors every time. But easy to do a proper condition assessment, measure thickness and if in good condition and spec then no need to replace. I got at least 2 sets of pads on the LR4 rotors, maybe 3.
Less of an issue if you're doing yourself as rotors aren't that expensive. But dealers charge $1000 per axle for pad/rotor so I would think hard before doing that!

I installed Porterfield pads on the LR3 before the originals were worn out because I didn't like the brake dust with the factory pads.
Sold the LR3 with 130K miles with the original rotors. I did drive it fairly gently, but did use it off-road and many, many miles here in the mountains of Colorado.
As gently as I drove it, I only got a little over 20 mpg in the summer and maybe 17 in the winter, but I had slightly oversized Nitto tires on it.
The D5, gas engine, gets over 20 even in the winter and 22 or 23 in the summer, even in mountain driving.
I rarely drive in rush hour traffic but Colorado is getting more and more crowded.

FYI I quickly scanned and on the D5 the rear rotors are $168 a pop from Merriam, so a local dealer it will probably be more.
Front rotors $200 a pop, a set of front pads $186.
Rear pads are $120.
These are OEM parts.
So I expect having the dealer doing brakes will be pricey, especially if they don’t last that long.

Porterfields pads are $130 for front and $100 for rear.
Of course you can't have the dealer install that brand.

For my LR3 I bought Brembo. It was OEM and they work well. No dust issues either. And price wise they were very affordable.
