Default Bargain roof racks

With the high price we paid for these cars we should be careful with cheap roof racks - it’s a critical part that could be dangerous if it fails.

A friend of mine had a motorcycle dealership and so could never understand the parents who would come in, buy their kid a fancy bike like a KTM and pay money for all sorts of fancy accessories for it, then when asked about helmets would say “show me the cheapest one” and wouldn’t pay for any form of protective clothing...

Same goes for people that buy the latest iPhone and use it with a cheap eBay USB charger and then yell at a Apple when it gets zapped by it or their knock off battery sets the thing on fire...

So yeah, if we can afford a LR we can afford a known brand roof rack or cross bars even if we don’t want to pay the dealership price for a LR labeled one!

FYI, there is a set of OEM D5 bars for sale in the marketplace section.

I agree wholeheartedly! Just looking at all of the options. Frankly the crossbars will be used mostly for hauling surfboards, so while I want something of good quality, I also don't need to shell out the big bucks for Thule, etc. Just because I can spend the money, doesn't mean it needs to or should be spent...just looking for the happy medium .

Thanks for that! I found the OEMs at Rimmer for a great price...might just go that route .

That’s the best result, the best value vs the cheapest.

I'm getting a D5 and I already have the Thule Wingbars and the same cargo box. Do you know the fit kit & flush rail part numbers you have there ?
Don't you find the cargo box hard to reach when centred like that ? The D5 is already asymmetrical from behind .. ;-)

For what its worth I bought the bars from ebay (Fit for 2017-2020 Land Rover Discovery L462 Cross Bars Roof Rack Crossbar) and they worked fine carrying both a Thule and a yakima skybox 16 carbonite on 2 separate 1000+ mile trips. so rails are OEM and the bars are third party.

You don't know how close someone will be parking next to you at the ski area or trailhead. I have the sidesteps so not an issue for me.

Since these aren't a helmet I don't see any reason to go overboard on them. I bought the eBay knockoffs and they look like they will hold up just fine for the few things I will put on the roof.
