The DEF tank capacity is 4.8 US gallon, remember seeing somewhere indicating dealer full refill is 8 bottles at 0.5 gallon each.

 

If you get a dealer to refill your DEF they have a machine that essentially vacuums out all of the DEF in the tank and replaces it with a pre-determined amount. I don't know why, but the do this to ensure accuracy in the amount put in. (can't they just put a gauge on it like fuel??)

If an owner refills, there's no way to know exactly how much is in there and apparently if you fill it up all the way so that it's flowing out of the top of the tube, it can cause all sorts of havoc with sensors within the system.

I actually freaked myself out the first time I refilled because I accidentally poured it in too fast and it backed up and overflowed. I thought I'd over filled it, but I didn't.

The reality is DEF is cheap, putting it in is easy and you just need to put enough in so that it reads you have a few thousand miles of range on it. Putting a couple of gallons in will easily get you 4-5k miles.

 

By the time the light comes on to add DEF, you will likely need a full 2.5 gallon jug since you will only have 1200-1500 miles until DEF is empty. Take the cap off, extend the hose from the DEF box/jug, and add slowly to avoid overflowing (push the hose into the top of the tank inlet). You can also use the funnel provided with your vehicle (mine was in the glove box) and it might help the refill process. DEF is cheap! Right now under $11.00 for a 2.5 gallon jug from Peak at Sam's Club. When you restart the vehicle (it may take more than once), you will note that the message to refill DEF is no longer showing and you should be good for another 3000+ miles. Super simple, cheap and easy.

So if you tune it, it won't need DEF? Are there any consequences for that?

I accidentally put DEF fluid in my diesel tank ab half a gallon no more than a gallon. I have a 2011 F-250 with the new 6.7 power stroke. After putting the DEF in the fuel tank I called a mechanic who said it would not hurt but it might smoke. Well after driving ab 2 miles my engine shut off and wouldn't crank back up, well it would try to but just kept sputtering dead. I put 5 more gallons in it to try to dilute it some. After about 30 mins of turning engine over it would crank and idle but when I mash the accelerator it will not respond or rev up at all. And a alarm comes up on my cluster saying low fuel pressure.
