Thanks for the replies and help! It is much appreciated. I ordered the Zerostart, given that the OEM parts looked like a great setup but weren't worth the premium.

Regarding refilling on coolant, is there a particular procedure for the TD6 regarding bleeding the reservoir afterward? I'm coming from a decade of BMWs with a built-in auto bleed process you could access.

Thanks again for the help, and have a great weekend!

I don't recall losing much at all. I opened up that bleeder let it run and kept adding coolant until it was full.

Thanks again for the help, especially from RyanLR3, for the pictures. I completed the installation of the Zerostart last week. I bought an extra hose as backup and some OEM coolant. The installation was straightforward. The hose was a tight fit, but I ran it under hot water, which helped me fit it over the heater ends. I have the cord under the hood, like RyanLR3's picture, but I aim to route it through the lower bumper like the OEM kit. I'll work on that when I have more time and it is warmer.

Performance-wise, you can feel the heater working. I plug it in in the morning when I wake up, and the engine gets about 2.5 hours with the heater on before I go to work. The truck starts right up without the glow plugs, comes to temperature quicker, and the cab heats much quicker. For reference, the mornings here have been in the low to mid-20s. The engine is also smoother, which makes me feel good, at least.

Overall I think the heater is worth it if you live somewhere cold to help reduce wear and tear and improve comfort. The truck has never had an issue starting when it's cold with the newer diesel technology, but I think the heater still makes sense with a diesel. The Zerostrart is definitely cheaper than OEM (Paramus wanted almost 1K for the parts alone). Thanks again for the knowledge on the forum, and take care!

going to take a trip north soon and started to wonder how or if the TD6 would start at -30C. i made the trip a few years back in a TDI V6 Touareg. the first morning it was -29 C and i did not expect the TDI to start as i did not have an engine heater. To my surprise it started right up. Later i read that the VW TDI engine slightly delays fuel injection at cold temps in order to create more heat in the combustion chamber. I would think our Ford TD6 engines must have similar abilities however having a back up plan is always a good idea.

to my surprise i discovered the my TD6 has a factory engine water heater installed as in the pictures above on this thread. The problem with this water heater is that there is no wiring- there is a rubber cap over the 3 contact blades to power the heater. A quick look for parts shows- 2 factory wiring cords- one to an outlet for the front bumper and another from the front bumper receptacle to a wall outlet. The cost of these 2 factory cords is $450. Ridiculous ! so i got a extension cord and replaced the outlet end with 3 blade receptacles and bingo- works like a charm.

anyone have experience starting the TD6 at -30C (-22F) or colder?

I know this is an old post, but which 3 blade receptacle did you get for the OEM block heater extension cord? Do you mind sending a photo of one that looks like it because i am not spending $800 bucks for 2 wiring harness's.

But no problems with it drawing too much power etc?

I never routed mine to the bumper. The heater cord on mine is long enough to run up to the front windshield cowling. I just run my extension cord up there.

Which extension cord do you have to plug into it? this is my outlet from the "heater" itself (photo below). I don't want to spend $800 bucks on the harness's lol.

The OEM is Calix branded from FInland.

You can find places in Europe to get a cord sent over.

I actually used a DEFA miniplug kit I had laying (you can get them at pretty much any dealer in NA) and then picked up Callix-Defa adapter plug.
